The Aussie Adventurer

Every Christmas Holiday for the last four years, Maurie Mad Maurie Laughlan, has been donating his type A positive platelets here at SCBC on his annual migration through the area. Prior to his donation, this year, he donated a combination of platelets and plasma at the Chiba Blood Bank near Tokyo, Japan. A native of Australia, hes donated in Sydney, Cairns, and Adelaide, as well as experiencing the Chiba, Nagoya, Japan blood banks and Tokyo & Albury (NSW Australia).

When Maurie donated platelets with us last week, he brought a few samples of the giveaways from the Japanese blood bank. A packet of tissues, and a packet of ear buds (cotton ear swabs). If you think hes a little special in Tallahassee, Florida, you can guess hes unique in Japan, where blood recipients hope to suddenly speak English from his blood. If it works, Gday mate, will be the first thing they say!

Gday from Cairns, Australia.

No, language is not spontaneously transferred via blood transfusion, but recipients of Mauries blood are getting it from a very healthy runner and cyclist. He competes in Tallahassees Jingle Bell Run, and this past summer cycled 2,000 miles in northern Japan.

We hope hell show off his American Blood Donor t-shirt the next time hes in Japan!
